Equine-Assisted Therapy

Equine-Assisted Therapy provides a metaphoric experience with horses to promote emotional growth. This therapy teaches clients about themselves, allows recognition of dysfunctional behavior, and helps define healthy relationships.
Horses are non-judgmental and do not have expectations or motives. The horse will only mirror the clients thoughts and behavior. This allows clients to practice congruency without the fear of rejection by making them aware of their emotional state. Working with horses allows clients to gain insight into their feelings, behaviors, patterns, congruency, boundaries, and stumbling blocks to recovery,
Equine-Assisted Therapy occurs in a group setting facilitated by a certified Equine-Assisted Therapist and a trained professional therapist. The process involves establishing a relationship with the horse on the ground and as the relationship matures, the clients eventually will ride the horse. Clients also learn how to care for the horses. Through interaction, the therapist will ask questions based on what is being revealed thru the “relationship.”

Buffalo Valley has been providing affordable alcohol/substance abuse treatment to patients in need for more about 30 years now. Of those 30 years, I have had the privilege of directing that treatment for over 18 years. I am happy to say, more than 1200 patients a year find their way to our doors. I am even happier to report that half of those are still sober a year later.
